Blank Square
Animal 1
(Castle Face Records)

If you’ve ever wondered about what The Nation of Ulysses might sound like today had they not disbanded, well, this might be a good idea. Frenzied, noisey remnants of saxophone-punk where the creativity of Greg Ginn is present, as well as nods to ’70s experimental ideas, there’s manic and jazzy swells of careful chaos, with an occasional lounge moment. Probably not what most are going to expect coming from San Francisco in 2017, but the oddity here is part of the appeal.
