Further proof of the lasting impression of the industrial music made decades ago, Tyler Newman’s doomgaze outfit Negative_Crush sounds like a late night overdose of both Frontline Assembly and My Bloody Valentine. An album where the cover art suits the mood, this is a turbulent ride of drum and keys on autopilot, while the muscular guitar fuzz threatens to burst through the speakers and knock you out cold. While the guitars are certainly the main event, Newman’s vocals range from anxious to cryptic and always dark, and the stripped back production keeps the entire affair humble. Amazingly, despite the post-metal and noise, this one’s quite catchy and unique. This is the band we all hoped Ministry would become. (Tom Haugen)
