Album Review: Roo Panes – ‘Paperweights’

Roo Panes
Paperweights
(CRC Music)

An English troubadour who embraces atypical folk-pop, this second album of thoughtful and agile acoustic guitar songs from Roo Panes is self-described as songs about ‘freedom, risk, vulnerability, moving on and letting go, lifting the paperweight.’ A listen where grace and poetic sophistication are unending, whether the soft singing or the lush harmonies are the focus, the cellos, strings, mandolins and accompanying female voices punctuate the mood, creating a Nick Drake type of atmosphere that’s not easy to forget. (Tom Haugen)
