Album Review: Wussy – ‘Forever Sounds’

Wussy
Forever Sounds
(Shake It)

How Cincinnati’s Wussy have avoided global fame is beyond me. Initiated by the duo of Chuck Cleaver (formerly of Ass Ponys) and Lisa Walker, the pair have been sharing songwriting duties and alternating vocals on 5 albums of robust and carefully thought out alt-rock before this one. Forever Sounds shows the band flexing their shoegaze muscles and utilizing droning, noisey melody to their advantage. Though at their core there’s a tense rock element, and there does exist plenty of hushed beauty, there’s also just as much sonic, droning rock that sits somewhere amid R.E.M, Pixies and Sebadoh. Album of the year material here, folks. (Tom Haugen)
