Night Birds – Maimed For the Masses – Review by John B. Moore

Night Birds
Maimed For the Masses 7”
(Fat Wreck Chords)

Serving as a prelude to their next full length (Born to Die in Suburbia), Jersey/Brooklyn punks Night Birds offer a pretty good idea of what to expect with their 4-song 7 inch Maimed for the Masses. And what exactly should you expect? Sweet, sweet early 80’s inspired hardcore with surf guitars and drums (that’s right, Jersey has beaches too!). The sound is a bit like The Circle Jerks and Dead Kennedys with Dick Dale sitting in on guitar (oh and Dick brought his drummer along too).

The title song is the highlight, but the three tracks that make up the B-side (“Last Gasp,” “Barred Out” and “Boat Trash”) are almost as strong. All three of these songs are exclusive to this Fat Wreck Chords 7” and sadly, over before you know it.

Fast, furious and without taking themselves too serious, Night Birds is a good reminder that there are still some in punk rock that look a little further back than Green Day and Blink 182 for inspiration. (John B. Moore)

"What if I send in the tape and they don't like it? I mean, what if they say I'm no good? What if they say, "Get outta here, kid. You got no future"? I mean, I just don't think I can take that kind of rejection."
