Austin comes through with another fantastic listen, this time the fifth LP from psyche-garage rock stalwarts The Black Angels. Steering deeper into rock territory here, the blues riffs, powerful droning and many versions of gothic pop litter this post-election album that’s all at once fuzzy, blistering and harrowing. While the band’s trademark psyche-rock influences are still intact, the focus of the album is atmosphere and mood, forgoing superficial gratification for a deeper level of artistic creativity. Fans of work by Lou Reed, Roger Waters and David Bowie should dive in.
