Fear of Missing Out
(Fat Wreck Chords)
For their long awaited debut release, The Bombpops chose to work with the most notorious independent punk label around. Fat Mike and Co. are an obvious choice for the band, whose blend of ’90s skate punk and melodic pop punk sit nicely alongside their renowned roster.
Throughout the album, they channel the best parts of the ’90s California punk scene, benefiting from improved modern production. Jen Razavi takes the lead on vocals for most of the album, but the harmonies that Poli Van Dam add in support work well. When Van Dam takes the lead, the ragged edge to her voice adds some They even take some chances with the freedom afforded on a full length, adding some hardcore elements on tracks like Brake Lights, which works surprisingly well. Even before learning the story behind Be Sweet, it is the standout track on the album, a near perfect catchy pop punk tune. Knowing that the late Brandon Carlisle wrote the lyrics adds weight to the song and explains why the music on this song most closely resembles Teenage Bottlerocket.
The Bombpops are a great addition to the Fat label and they have created a strong debut full length to introduce themselves to a larger audience. They manage to capably pay tribute to the punk favorites of years gone by while keeping a fresh edge that should draw in a younger crowd.
