Don’t let the fact that Colin Stetson’s primarily instrument is a saxophone deter you from giving this 5th solo album a spin, cause there’s a dense experimental and atmospheric element to these 6 songs you won’t find elsewhere. Heavy on percussion and breathing techniques, all tracks were recorded live in the studio, where Stetson’s voice varies from primitive to falsetto, while musically there’s constantly shifting tempos, textures, and all sorts unique richness that, despite a very abstract feel, still manages to find grooves. Though songs like “In The Clinches” are 3 minutes of punk energy, muffled and quivering with brazen frenzy, the remainder of the songs are 6-12 minutes of complicated rhythm, meditative manipulation, and exploration into atypical ways to produce melody.
