Album Review: The Gift – ALTAR

The Gift
ALTAR
(La Folie)

The stunning 6th album from these Portuguese heroes was produced and partially penned by Brian Eno, but there’s plenty of other reasons to get on board here, too. Most easily classified as alt-rock, but also dabbling in dream-pop and prog-rock, the band use lush strings to their advantage, and aren’t afraid of adopting electronica into their formula, though mostly from a post-punk angle. While songs like “Big Fish” are modern day electro-pop, “Love Without Violins”, featuring Eno’s baritone vocals, is a more ominous affair, and elsewhere you’ll find nods as diverse as folk and arena rock. Though the band have been together since 1994, this album that took 2 years to make is easily their best yet.
