Album Review: Sara Watkins – ‘Young In All The Wrong Ways’

Sara Watkins
Young In All The Wrong Ways
(New West)

The members of Nickel Creek have done some amazing solo work this year, and this time it’s Sara’s 3rd album on her own, the self-described ‘break up record with myself’, Young In All The Wrong Ways. Though she isn’t armed with a fiddle here, Watkins has plenty of other strengths in the form of forthright, poetic wordplay, and ukulele magic via folk, bluegrass, and sweet indie-rock. While Watkins occasionally gets fuzzy and into crunchy rock territory, she also produces gritty honky tonk that will make any alt-country fan swoon. While the lyrical content is introspective and nearly cathartic, the music here is bright, beautiful and unforgettable.
