Song Premiere: Empty Lungs – “Don’t Get It”

We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Empty Lungs’ new song “Don’t Get It” (listen below). The track is taken from the band’s upcoming album EP Don’t Get It, which is scheduled to be released on March 10th through Hidden Pony Records. The track “Don’t Get It” is a powerful surge of what happens when a band combines pop anthems with a holdfast punk attitude. Their hooks are woven into a gritty atmosphere, destructive in energy but uniquely beautiful in essence.

Don’t Get It was recorded by long time friend Rocky O’Reilly (And So I Watch You From Afar, Oppenheimer) at Start Together Studios in Belfast, Ireland. The first two tracks were mixed by Gus Van Go and Werner F (Said The Whale, Wintersleep) and the third by Jesse Gander (Japandroids, White Lung).

The band comments on the song:

“‘Don’t Get It’ is basically a fuck you to a culture that warps young people into thinking that self-image and selfishness are the core values of our modern society. That the only dreams worth having are the ones that revolve around wealth, celebrity and looking ‘beautiful.’ That’s a load of horse shit and those kinds of attitudes create an atmosphere that alienates anyone that doesn’t fit the mould. The youth culture that I love revolves around tolerance, art, activism and social change. Unfortunately these aren’t the dreams being sold to many of us.”

About Empty Lungs:

Managing to capture the angst and protest spirit of punk rock and blend it with hooks and melody more akin to the indie rock and powerpop of the ’90s, Empty Lungs have an energy and determination second to none. Then again when you grow up in Belfast, Northern Ireland at the tail end of a bitter and divisive 35 year conflict, grit and determination to create something positive and unique are instilled in you.

Formed in late 2011 by vocalist/guitarist and songwriter Kev Jones they’ve released a string of EPs, singles and 7 inches all receiving support and airplay from BBC Radio 1 and BBC Radio Ulster.

When you live on a small Island on the edge of Europe and you want to play a ton of rock shows there’s only one thing to do and that’s get in the van and go. That’s exactly what they’ve done. Hitting the DIY circuits in UK, Europe and US the band have managed to share the stage with a host of acts along the way including: Japandroids, Alkaline Trio, The Subways, Dead To Me, Augustines, Lemuria, The Flatliners, Jeff Rosenstock, Franz Nicolay.

Things have been far from straight forward for Empty Lungs. As well as the usual struggles of losing members, losing jobs and facing the financial strain of DIY touring there have been some more unusual setbacks. In 2013 Kev Jones found himself climbing out of a 2nd floor window in the midst of a house fire that (after nearly killing him) left him homeless 2 weeks before the band’s first European tour. Cancelling was never an option and during that tour a bond was forged between members Mykie Rowan (Drums/Vocals), Conor Langan (Bass Vocals) and Kev Jones. Their determination to put every drop of energy into doing what they love was bolstered.

In 2014 Empty Lungs were the first ever Irish band to play the The Fest in Gainesville, Florida and have returned 3 years in a row, touring the east coast several times in the process.

The tail end of 2016 seen the band become the first European artist to sign with Canadian based label Hidden Pony Records.
