Nevada’s math rock infused emo band Alaska toured through Europe and the U.K. at the end of the summer. While in the U.K., the band was able to do a live studio session with Papercrane Recordings. Since arriving back from across the pond and touring through the U.S. again, the band has decided to take what they call “a big nap.” Watch the videos from the session below and read what Alaska has to say about the situation below. P.S. catch Alaska for their final show on December 2nd, info right here.
“After 5 years of being a band and in just this last year of 5+ tours spanning 2 continents, 9(?!) countries and 108ish gigs, we’ve definitely done more than we could have ever imagined with just a whip and some jams. We are endlessly thankful for the opportunities we’ve had and for all of our friends who’ve helped us along the way, there are too many of you to name and that fact alone feels wonderful. All things considered, 100+ shows in a year certainly has a way of breaking down the human spirit to nearly nothing. Now is the time for us to take a step back and take care of actual real life things for a bit. We haven’t had much “regular” in a long time and while regular is generally taken for granted, we miss it. Things like sleeping in a bed, doing laundry, moving into a new place, dieting, exercising, giving love to our family, to our friends, our pets, giving love to ourselves, participating in capitalism, paying rent on time, cooking, drinking in moderation, smoking less weed, walking in the dirt, watching the sunset and more things that i get excited about just from typing them out.
It should also be said that we will eventually be writing more music, booking more tours, recording and all other gig life things, but we’re giving ourselves some room to breathe, that way we can make something truly wonderful. Members of the band will still be performing in a few other projects while we get our bearings, music is still all we really know. We are all doing a Killers cover set together sometime in December. Tyler is playing in Groomlake now, and in a Strokes cover band with those boys too. I (Joel) will be doing some solo gigs, and a “TARP” cover band show also. Nick will probably do some solo drum stuff around town too. Maybe Cody as well.
Lastly, given the circumstances of the last few days and the next 4 years of American life, I (Joel) will still be organizing shows (as best I can) and collecting donations at them on behalf of the ACLU and other charities that promote civil liberties for ALL people.”
