Cannabis Corpse /Ghoul
The thrashy death metal of Cannabis Corpse is up first on this double sided twelve inch confining two hellish tracks per side per band. Ghoul haunts the flip side. Splatter vinyl is gorgeous, teawsing me draped lavishly on the turntable. But digital or disc or vinyl, run, don’t walk, to your nearest internet connection hole and order this damn thing.
Everything being done in house lately for CC, bassist/vocalist Land Phil (Municipal Waste), recorded their two tracks in his studio/home in Richmond VA. Ghoul also kept in hood by recording in the Oaktown’s Earhammer studio. Considering the ex-members list reads like a metal history book with time spent in Exhumed, Dystopia, Phobia, Impaled, Wolves in the Throne Room and Asunder, …Jesus. Ghoul has been slaying half-ass Skeletonwitch imitators for the prior decade with perverted savagery.
Splatterhash demonstrates why these two are gaining perpetual respect as each band grows fiercer and strengthen their sound. Tankcrimes is putting this out in the same stream as Iron Reagan and Exhumed’s split; and the inevitable, Municipal Waste and Toxic Holocaust split, Toxic Waste. For this, Tankcrimes and the bands continue the streak of splits with the one piece of artwork for the entire release, which embodies the unified mindset. I hate when you buy a split and it is just some cheap band pic on each side with credits and maybe lyrics. The artwork was done by Andrei Bouzikov (Toxic Holocaust, Skeletonwitch, Municipal Waste). Battle stances, monsters, and post apocalyptic themes in bright weed green carry forth all traditional aspects of canonized thrash covers.
Blast beats and maniacally tight chopping riffs with bellows from Satan’s anus rigidly respect the death metal formula. “The Inhalation Plague” and “Shatter Their Bongs” continue CC’s tongue in cheek nod to weed drenched homages/parodies of death metal classics. If you happen to be humorless and have a wooden stick up your ass (not metal, obviously); this is not a joke band. This shit is real. Play it. Not that this wins my argument, but they also recruit RVA brother, Pustulus Maximus of GWAR to shred.
And while Ghoul isn’t my best argument for “this is not a joke band”, as they all don masks and go by names, Cremator, Fermentor, Digestor, and Dissector, and claim to be mutants from Creepsylvania, I emphasize that this band is no joke. Their offerings of “Inner Sanctum” and “Spill Your Guts” reek of metal but nuances of other rock and punk and surf creep in. Never fret, fair brother, for these songs are supplemental and are always spit with seething discontent and punish their instruments with Lucifer’s approval. These two were a perfect pair.
