Live In London Hammersmith Apollo 1993
(Eagle Rock Entertainment)
This previously unreleased live performance from December 12th, 1993 features the then newly reformed Dio playing at the Hammersmith Apollo in London. Touring in support of their new album Strange Highways, the band played selections from the new album, some early Dio classics, and a few songs from Black Sabbath and Rainbow. This was released on two CDs, DVD and Blu-ray.
Across eighteen songs (including one drum solo), the group plays six songs from Strange Highways, plus three Black Sabbath originals (“The Mob Rules,” “Children Of The Sea,” and “Heaven & Hell”) and one Rainbow cover, “Man On The Silver Mountain.” The band turn in an excellent performance and Dio just blows away everyone with that incredible voice of his. The bonus feature shows footage of the band before and after the gig, with mini interviews prior to them going on stage and getting some make-up applied along with some funny and insightful commentary from each member. It’s a well rounded set-list, and the band also included (then) new material from the Strange Highways album.
With great sound, a tight performance that showed the band having a blast, the crowd being receptive to both the new and the classic, this is a great purchase for fans. It’s great that there are such quality performances out there to keep his memory alive and keep the fans happy. (Rick Ecker)
