Michiganian punks Dogleg have dedicated their careers to playing fast and screaming, but their maturity makes their art more than just traditional, bedroom emo. Dogleg have earned the title of a fully-fledged, four-piece punk band, and now they’re showing us true talents with their debut LP.
Dogleg‘s LP, Melee (via Triple Crown), is a comprehensive introduction to this transformed group. Dogleg’s impressive ability to craft gut-wrenching punk is only one of their talents, as this record proves. Beyond their poignant lyricism is their technical expertise, taking traditional, Midwest emo and elevating it.
Their single “Kawaski Backflip” is a direct show of their power and their fearless personalities. With wavering vocals that teeter on utter emotional destruction, the track reminds me of the “don’t fuck with me, or I’ll cry” meme.
As for the big finale, “Ender” can best be described as heartbreak in under seven minutes. Featuring drifting melodies and gang vocals, the thrashed track wraps up the journey with a sweetly packaged goodbye.
The auditory sophistication might confuse non-midwest emo disciples, but this record proves itself to be complete and cohesive, fleshing out their capacity to create emotionally compelling narratives.
