There’s an indescribable element to New York’s Fovea that is a large part of their appeal. Equal parts quirky indie-rock, soulful jazz and ambient, psyche-friendly pop sounds, don’t let the opening eccentric keyboard tune fool you, because there’s nothing but surprises from these 4 youngsters. While the dual gender vocals are certainly a highlight (the female pipes being extremely robust, the male sometimes with effects), the kaleidoscope approach of retro-rock, laid back lounge and ’70s funk sounds bring to mind Ra Ra Riot in a more technically proficient and theater student influenced sort of way. An impressive debut and indication of greater things to come.
