Though they were most active in the ’90s, Kentucky’s Freakwater assembled in 2013 for the 20th anniversary tour of their 1993 album, which spawned the new songs here. A very mountain-esque folk outing, the haunting and dark songs here are filled with 2 female voices that complement each other across stripped back country and fuller, psyche-rock moments. Fiddles, organs and banjos bring both a bluegrass and gospel feel, as Janet Beveridge Bean and Catherine Irwin, the driving forces behind Freakwater, prove that they are still masters of rich, alt-country, 30 years later.
