Jim Ed Brown
In Style Again
(Plowboy)

On his first solo album in 3 decades, the 80 year old Brown stays true to the real roots of country music, long before the FM dial saturated it with their commercial and generic ways. Still armed with a warm and smooth voice (this album was recorded after he was diagnosed with lung cancer), the songs here utilize steel guitar and vocal harmonies in the most efficient manner, as Brown taps into a vintage country sound that still feels current and largely more interesting than today’s often misguided idea of what country music entails. Though some of the cameos from country rock royalty may help the visibility of this album, Brown alone is enough to warrant these traditionals and originals a spin. (Tom Haugen)
