Nikki Lane
Highway Queen
(New West)

Nashville’s Lane has hinted towards this level of greatness with her first 2 albums, but here she trumps not only all her own work, but just about everyone doing country-rock sounds. Lane certainly has her finger on the pulse of old school country, yet she still channels the ideas of ’90s alt-country, providing sweet versus raspy vocals with straight forward wordplay. Though she’s practical with the aching pedal steel in all the right ways, Lane can pen an adventurous, upbeat tune as well, bringing honky tonk influences as well as those from her former homes of Los Angeles and New York. Make no mistake though, as this is at its core a country album, and probably one of the best you’ve heard in a long time.
