Ryan Culwell
(Lightning Rod)

Every now and then I hear something that I feel compelled to tell anyone who will listen that they simply must spend time with in order to live a fulfilled and complete existence. In this case, it’s the first album from Texas troubadour Culwell in nearly a decade, who put off music to raise his family. Though autobiographical songs by a guy with an acoustic guitar aren’t in short supply these days, Culwell has the voice and songwriting prowess to leave an indelible mark through powerful and rugged ways that bring to mind Springsteen, Dylan or even Ryan Adams. Call it Americana, indie-folk or country-rock, but shelve it alongside albums like Demolition (Ryan Adams) or Suicide Medicine (Rocky Votolato). (Tom Haugen)
