Formerly the frontman of Vulture Whale, these days Wes McDonald is recording as Terry Ohms. This new effort was recorded in his home, and he played all instruments. Hell, he even did the artwork, released it on his own label, and created the visual work for the videos, making it the complete DIY package.
The nine tunes here all span different variations of McDonald’s creative spirit, starting with the aptly titled “Mind Blow” where acoustic strumming and a hypnotic beat make it rugged folk-rocker that erupts into a stadium sized frenzy. Elsewhere, things get funky, danceable and dark on “We Love You”, and that theme runs parallel on the post-punk ideas of “Bring All To Front”. An album with a lot of heart, “Those Eyes” is an example of his soulful rock tendencies, and he saves the best for last with the crisp percussion and cautious alt-rock sensibilities of “Little Bit”.
A very unassuming album, don’t let this one pass you by- it’s an early candidate for one of the year’s best.
