Whore Of Bethlehem
Upon Judas’ Throne
(Self-Released)

Austin’s Whore Of Bethlehem come out with a real bang on this debut album, mixing black metal and death metal elements along with a hefty helping of sludge which certainly manages to make an impact right from the get-go. This is an album that never lets up or gives into slight interludes, as it roils forth with the deepest of southern murk, replete with a monstrous section of growls and absolutely putrid scowls that seem to drip with slime. There’s definitely a fair amount of tremolos mixed in here along with the thrash, groove and sludge riffs, making for a great dose of acidic death metal when the time is right. Additionally, the drums come off with a blazing amount of fury, yet manage to keep proper precision and generally work to show that the man behind the kit is doing a commendable job. Again we have another band that is capable of mixing black and death metal together without giving in too much to either genre. It’s not a very long record, but it gives you a dirty taste of black and death metal that seems warm, thick and full of fuzz and vigor. Upon Judas’ Throne is an impressive debut, but I’m sure that these guys will get even stronger in years to come as they’re really making a name for themselves with this punishing debut of merciless onslaught that you’ll be feeling all of the way into next week. There is no escape from the fierce beating that you’ll receive on this release and it’s a great portent of things to come. It definitely shows even more proof that the Texas metal scene has been exploding as of late and it definitely needs more attention. The south is rife with fury, as Whore Of Bethlehem prove with this release. You’d better get your grimy hands on it. (Eric May)
