Wild Moccasins

(New West)

Though they’re one of the most talked about outfits in indie-pop circles, Houston’s Wild Moccasins have a sound that could have easily sandwiched them between Blondie and The Pet Shop Boys on the FM dial in the early ’80s. Mixing post-punk, New Wave, synth/dance rock and indie sensibilities, this sophomore album buzzes with undeniable allure thanks to dual gender vocals, colorful guitar work and unpredictable and jubilant rhythms. Surprisingly, the wordplay isn’t always as upbeat as the tempos, the album title actually coming from the code one of the band members had to punch into a mental institution to see their ill mother. One of the most exciting bands emerging out of the underground indeed. (Tom Haugen)
