California metal band Avenged Sevenfold’s acclaimed debut album Sounding the Seventh Trumpet is celebrating its 20-year anniversary today.

The name of the album comes from the Book of Revelation, in reference to the apocalypse and sounding the last (seventh) trumpet, denoting the end of the world.

An AllMusic review following the release praised the band’s well-put-together sound and vision, ” Sounding the Seventh Trumpet is an exceptional album that finds the group perfecting its own distinct style, and although the bandmembers remain fairly unknown on the metal scene, one could only imagine that this will change rather quickly.”

Following the album’s release, the band’s visibility did, in fact, change rather quickly. The band have continued to evolve and morph their sound, and they have been working to put out their eighth studio album. Though, it’s hard to say if Avenged Sevenfold would have that same momentum had it not been for their foundation-setting debut that jumpstarted their musical career.
