Black Flag’s fifth full length studio album, In My Head, was released on SST Records 35 years ago today! The record showed the band moving even further into experimental metal territory. The songs were longer, and so was their hair.
This often overlooked later portion of Black Flag’s catalogue is definitely worth revisiting. So take some time to listen to a young Henry Rollins howling, a young Greg Ginn wailing on his guitar, and a young Bill Stevenson pounding on the skins.
The proto grunge of In My Head was truly ahead of its time. It also featured amazing Raymond Pettibon art in addition to some killer songs. “Drinking and Driving”, “Retired At 21” and the rest have aged better than you might have expected.
