Airships on the Water are a post-rock band from Fayetteville, Arkansas.
They recently put out a new single called “With Fathoms to Go” which is their third single off of their upcoming album Shoreline Projector. It’s available now on their Bandcamp.
“With Fathoms to Go” is a classic post-rock instrumental, full of big, swirling guitars and mesmerizing melodies. The track starts off with just the guitars and no drums for the first minute, building atmosphere before establishing the rhythm. Then the beat takes off, and the crashing symbols become a catharsis for the tension built up in the guitars.
It’s an epic, seven-minute tune that moves through a number of peaks and valleys, but the most interesting comes around the three-minute mark when the entire song grinds to a halt before slowly rebuilding the atmosphere established before, creating a sense of loss and recovery. Then the drums grow stronger and stronger until they, again, serve as the emotional counterbalance to the guitars. It’s truly a beautiful song that harkens back to the greatest artists of the genre like Godspeed You! Black Emperor and The Appleseed Cast.
