Bankrupt are a punk band from Budapest, Hungary.
The band recently released their sixth album, Illiberal Holiday, and the full album is available on their Bandcamp both in English and the original Hungarian.
One of the great things about this album is how poppy it gets while still maintaining fiercely political lyrics. The opening track, “Idiot Tax,” skewers the economic policies of Hungary in classic pop-punk style with a killer pop hook. Then “Hungarian Satan” leads in with killer power chords before the guitar turns it into a pop punk ditty with just a touch of ska guitar.
The title track goes after Hungary’s environmental policies with a pop sensibility that would make Blink-182 envious. “Tropical Breakdown” uses keyboards to great effect as the song takes on a mod feel in a diatribe against corporate greed with some really vivid and bizarre imagery. “The Plane to Toronto” is a surprisingly subtle punk tune that is kind of an inverted surf rock tune with some really fun and trippy guitars. Anyone who likes their political punk served up with a healthy dose of sugar is bound to love this album.
