Welcome to the end of your week, and your month for that matter, as March goes out like a lamb. Big Loser are an indie-punk outfit from Austin, Texas.
They have a new EP coming on May 19 on Black Numbers’ Records called left on delmar drive. The band will be releasing the EP as the follow up to their 2020 LP love you, barely living. The first first single from the EP is currently available on the label’s Bandcamp page for preorder. You can also get a bundle of all 70 Black Numbers’ releases for 90% off.
The single “i’m rubber, you’re glue” has exactly the childish vitriol expected from a song with such a title. It’s got a bitter sense of irony to it that contrasts the upbeat music. Because of that, it’s reminiscent of Ben Kweller, The Rentals, or even AJJ. As vocalist Chase D. Spruiell sings the refrain “It must be shit to be you,” it comes across all the more insulting for how casually it’s uttered. Instead of striking out in anger, the song is insulting in a detached and aloof manner. Because of that, the stinging words land as jokes.
Musically it’s light and breezy indie punk, which only serves to further undercut the casual lashing out in the lyrics. It seems like a fairly inoffensive pop tune, contrasting the cruel lyrical content. It demonstrates a great sense of humor and a wonderful pop sensibility that makes for a promising first single to what’s sure to be a really fun EP.
It’s still going to be a few months before this EP is released. Why not follow Big Loser on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to make sure you’re keeping up with the latest updates about this and future releases?
