Bandcamp of the Day: Caveman and the Banshee

Caveman and the Banshee

Caveman and the Banshee describe themselves as a kosmik atomic punk duo out of Nanaimo, British Columbia, but perhaps psychedelic punk would be a more apt descriptor. It’s a side-project of Dave Read and Valentina Cardinalli of Moths & Locusts.

They recently put out their new, self-titled album on NoiseAgonyMayhem Records. It’s currently streaming on their Bandcamp where you can also order the album on limited edition vinyl or cassette.

The album kicks off with “Are You Gonna Burn That Bridge?” which showcases a simple punk style, but with a funky, psychedelic bass riff that turns it into a bit more of a danceable tune. Then “Back in Time” really steps up the trippiness factor as a lot of distortion effects are added to some very simple, spoken vocals as the ethereal screams in the background create a haunting effect. “5 Years Old” is another song with a really fun rhythm, as the rhythm section creates something with a bit of a dance beat to it.

Penultimate track “Fleas” was released as a single, and it’s easy to see why as the song effortless flits by with a series of nonsense sounds that sound simply effervescent. Finally “The End Is The Beginning…The Beginning Is The End” closes out the album on the most psychedelic track as the keyboards create a deeply trippy atmosphere.
