Bandcamp of the Day: Girls Like Us

Girls Like Us

Girls Like Us are a garage punk band from London.

They recently released a new, seven-song EP called Bitter ‘Til the Bitter End. It’s available right now on their Bandcamp, where you can also order the album on CD.

The album kicks off with “Song of the Wytches” with its joyfully unhinged drumbeat that makes for a wildly fun opener. The Shakespearean refrain of “Double double, toil and trouble” should be especially appreciated by literature nerds such as myself. Then “Toothache” kicks off with an atmospheric, gothic guitar before giving way to classic, fuzzy garage rock that just lays everything out on the table. Then comes “My Boyfriend Was a Tory (So I Broke Up With Him)” (Tories being the conservative party in the U.K., for our non-British readers). The song is just as much fun as its hilariously straightforward title suggests.

“High Pressure” starts off with a very deliberate drumbeat before the guitars come in and become somehow punk and psychedelic at the same time, with just a touch of grunge. “School” is faster than the rest of the album so far and takes a step closer to hardcore. Then “Hair (haven’t we been here before” uses some really jarring chords but somehow they really work and make a supremely catchy tune.  Finally, “Spoonfed” is a slower tune with a gorgeous bass line and some fuzzed-out guitar solos to support some borderline-spoken word vocals. While the whole album is rooted in fuzzy garage rock, there’s also a lot of different styles blended with that fuzz, making for a surprisingly diverse album.

If you like what you hear (and why wouldn’t you?) give them some love by following them on Facebook and Instagram.
