Heartlay are a metalcore band who blend metal with electronic elements to create a sound reminiscent of ’90’s industrial. They recently put out a new album called Sovereign Sore, and it’s currently available on their Bandcamp along with the rest of the band’s discography.
Opening track “A Thousand Debris” opens on punishing guitar chords and electronic effects to create something like one of the faster Nine Inch Nails tunes. Then “Broken Seams” is a little slower and no less chord-heavy, but it’s the bass that really builds the gothic atmosphere of this track. Following that, “Ascend Anhedonia” has a disjointed electronic beat a la Stabbing Westward that blends nicely with the delicate melodies to create a sense of chaos and confusion.
Following that, the title track blends synthesizers and guitars perfectly to create an industrial goth feel with some very hardcore vocals. Closing track “It Burns On Its Own” brings that sense of chaos and confusion again as the crooked beat and ambient electronic sounds create a deep feeling of unease. It’s a deep, dark album that promises to be a lot of fun for metal and industrial fans alike.
