Hooves are a punk band from Bakersfield, California featuring ex-members of If It Kills You, Sic Waiting, DC Fallout, Black Sails, and Western Shores.
They recently released their debut single “W.K.W.W.A.” which stands for “We Know Who We Are.” The single is currently streaming on their Bandcamp.
The song opens with some lightly strummed power chords before the rest of the instruments and the distortion come in. The vocals are distinctly punk in the classic, punk rock, snot-nosed style of singing.
The song borders on hardcore, but isn’t without its pop elements and some traditional pop structure. Towards the end of the song, the guitar moves from power chords to individual notes, which is an unusual turn for a punk song. What’s more unusual is the string instruments that come in at the very end of the song to close it on a surprisingly somber note. It’s a song with a real sense of urgency and anger that bodes well for the future of this project.
