HotWax are a femme-forward garage punk band from Hastings, U.K.
They recently put out their new EP called A Thousand Times. It’s now up on their Bandcamp.
This magnificent EP begins by rocking us out to the tune of one hell of a steady punk beat in “Treasure” that brings to mind a slightly glammier Sleater-Kinney. Then the synth-heavy “All I Want,” like so many of the songs on this album, demonstrates a mastery of the Pixies’ classic loud-quiet-loud formula.
“Mother” opens up with a glorious guitar part that, alongside the funky bass line, brings to mind the introduction to Sum 41’s “Fat Lip.” But then instead of filling those elements with some sort of pop-punk sophomoric silliness, it goes into this sultry, Shirley Manson-esque goth-pop-grunge place. The title track begins with a little undistorted guitar before, again, launching into a brilliant take on the loud-quiet-loud formula. Finally, “Rip It Out” calls to mind New Noise cover alumni Scowl, as HotWax seems to be playing with some metaphoric imagery related to their band name.
