Bandcamp of the Day: Jävelin

Jävelin

Jävelin are a metal/punk band from Helsinki, Finland.

They recently put out their self-titled debut album, and it’s currently streaming on their Bandcamp where the cassette tape copies are already sold out, but you can still purchase it as a digital album.

I always love when bands combine metal and punk, or simply when metal bands show a strong punk influence. It’s always been interesting to me that the combination of punk and metal yields a wildly different sound every time. From Metallica to Jane’s Addiction to Earth Crisis, almost every time someone combines punk with metal it comes out sounding completely different.

Jävelin starts out with “Fire and Forget” which plays like a hardcore punk song with death metal-style vocals. But even with the metal vocals, the lyrics are clearly political in the classic punk fashion. Then “Hexhunt” cranks up the tempo for a blisteringly fast hardcore-style tune with the same growling, snarling vocals over the top. “Lusty Hell (Fuck)” is a great and daring name for a song, and it comes with the full force of the punk power chords and metal guitar solos.

“Why Aren’t You Screaming” is another great song title, and it leans a bit more towards speed metal but still has that great punk drumbeat as the song’s backbone. “Bonesplitter” is also a great song title, and it lives up to its name because the power and speed of the song create a chaotic ruckus that’s not unlike the crunch of bone splitting.

“Erectrocution” (this album is just jam packed with great song titles) has a touch of cowpunk underneath the guitar solos to create a down and dirty metal track. The album closes on the shortest track, “Killerz,” which has some killer guitar solos but has all the speed and fury of classic hardcore punk. If you love both of these genres equally, you have to check out Jävelin.
