Melancholic Seasons are a melodic death metal band from Frankfurt, Germany.
They recently released a new album called Past Seasons Pt. 1 – The Early Days. The album contains the band’s first four demos released between 1995 and 2000 rerecorded for 2023. It’s currently streaming on their Bandcamp.
The whole album starts off with a cryptic introduction track called “Into the Past” that calls to mind the backwards-talking man from Twin Peaks. But then it moves into “In Your Eyes” which certainly balances the melodic elements of traditional metal with the snarling vocals of death metal. “Autumnsphere” then comes in with heavy guitars that aren’t quite as fast as what you’re used to from death metal, but it otherwise rocks with all the force of death metal. The synth effects halfway through the song also give it a bit of a proggy feel. Then “Temptation” ratchets everything back up in a song that’s exactly the kind of intense, lightning-speed style that you’ve come to expect from quality death metal.
In “World of Pain,” the guitars start the song with a dreamy, swirling sound before diving into the death metal deep end of the death metal pool with great speed and force to their music. The instrumental reprise of “In My Eyes” is more ethereal than the original, with an almost psychedelic effect to the guitars. Finally, the album’s closer, “Sieben Tage Lang” (which translates to “Seven Days Long,”) is a huge, epic closer with some very grandiose guitar solos alongside death metal-style vocals. They’re a death metal band that don’t seem to mind if some moments on the album don’t necessarily sound like death metal, which is actually refreshing.
