Bandcamp of the Day: Morlocks

Morlocks

Morlocks are an alternative/industrial act from Gothenburg, Sweden. They put out a new album earlier this month called Praise the Iconoclast and it’s streaming now on their Bandcamp where you can also order the album on CD.

This is not your grandma’s industrial! That is, if your grandmother listened to industrial, which she probably didn’t. But still, this isn’t necessarily what people think of when they think of industrial. Opening track “Naš Tretji Uvod” (which translates to “Our Third Introduction”) is a grand, orchestral track that fuses in electronic and industrial elements.

“Mean World Syndrome” moves a little closer to traditional industrial, with some raging metal guitars. “Meanwhile in Space” plays around with some proggy synths to create an atmospheric track. Then “I’m the Payload” bridges the gap between synth-pop and industrial. “Dicks in Tanks” is a great song title, and it creates one of the bleakest, darkest soundscapes on the entire record, falling into the darkest depths of what industrial is capable of. Finally, closing track “Cold War Fusion,” which clocks in at nearly 10 minutes-long, uses sound effects of voices to create a chaotic and dark industrial soundscape that gives way to more hopeful synth-pop. It’s an unusual industrial album, and one that all industrial fans should check out.
