Bandcamp of the Day: Poindexter

Poindexter

Poindexter are a ska/pop-punk act out of Michigan.

Poindexter just released their latest album called Treats on Ska Punk International, and it’s currently streaming on their Bandcamp where you can also purchase the album on CD, cassette, and vinyl.

Opening track “Mammoth” lives up to its name, as it’s a long, slower track with a sense of indie/emo earnestness to establish that this isn’t going to be a typical ska album. “Serendipity” brings in the ska guitar, as well as the horns, to create something that ska fans will probably find a little more familiar. It’s a classic, pop-ska tune with just a touch of punk guitar to give it that much needed edge. “Be All You Can Be” creates this sense of exhaustion in the lyrics while, musically, the song is full of bright and positive energy. The title track is a little bit more slow and deliberate than ska tunes normally get, with dark lyrics that create a sense of confusion and being trapped.

“Hell” expresses the familiar frustrations of being broke and looking for a way to make money quickly. “11-8” is a beautifully written song about frustration, boredom, and longing for an ex–or just human contact in general. “Quirky,” which was released as an early single off this album, creates a sort of grandiose chorus with the way the trumpets are played. Finally, “Tongue Tied” is a folksy, indie tune that starts out with what sounds like a ukelele or a banjo and gradually gains more instruments but maintains an old-timey, almost dixieland jazz feel to it. Overall, this is a great album for anyone who likes seeing dark lyrics married to ironically upbeat music.
