Bandcamp of the Day: Slowenya

Slowenya

Slowenya are an alt-doom trio from the southwest of Finland.

They recently put out a two-song single with the A-side called “Angel Raised Wolves” and the B-side being “Horizontal Loops.” Both tracks are streaming on the band’s Bandcamp.

“Angel Raised Wolves” starts off with a dark, lurching sound that sounds more like grunge a la Alice in Chains than a doom act. But the six-and-a-half minute track goes through a number of phases throughout the song, and it eventually moves into more doom territory. Still, it’s hard to deny that the vocalist sounds eerily like Layne Staley. “Horizontal Loops” is more of a traditional doom track, with the slow, plodding, heavy style you’ve come to expect from the genre. It moves through a few different phases, though, too and, at times adds an almost hopeful edge to what’s typically a very desolate genre.
