Somei are a heavy shoegaze band from Richmond, Virginia. They just released a new single called “barbarella (melt away)” with B-side “shaken,” both of which are currently streaming on their Bandcamp.
True to the promise of the word “heavy” in heavy shoegaze, “barbarella (melt away)” has devastating guitars that thunder loudly, yet there’s something deeply optimistic in the song’s tone. “Shaken” is just as heavy at times, but it’s got a loud/quiet/loud formula going on that really brings out the delicate nature of the quieter portions of the song while also drawing attention to the sheer power of the guitars.
