Bandcamp of the Day: Spirit Oh Spirit

Spirit Oh Spirit

Spirit Oh Spirit are an indie pop band out of Cleveland, Ohio.

They just dropped a new single called “Animals at Heart.” It’s their second single of the year so far following January’s “Luminous Creatures.” The new song is currently available to stream on their Bandcamp page along with all of the band’s other singles dating back to September of 2020 with their first song “Old As Dirt.”

“Animals at Heart” is a truly precious little tune. It manages to demonstrate a world-weary irony and a sense of earnest childlike curiosity at the same time. It’s a gorgeous pop number with some really well worked out vocal harmonies. The harmonies bring out the beautiful melodies in the music. It’s a bright and happy song that doesn’t ignore the fact that darkness exists in the world. Instead, it seems to find beauty in spite of that.

The drumbeat is positively infectious, and the synthesizers carry the tune. But it’s really the unexpected addition of the violin that makes this song stand out as an indie pop gem. The lyrics are deeply hopeful, both about the singer’s personal journey and about humanity as a whole. The imagery in the lyrics really stands out to make this more than just a pleasant but forgettable pop song. It goes to a really dark place, but manages to climb back up to a place of light that leaves the listener with a welcome catharsis.

So far, the band have yet to put out a full album or even an EP, but they have put out a slew of quality pop singles like this which promise that, when they do put together their first full release, it will be something special.
