Vampire Slumber Party are a pop punk band from South London.
They recently put out a new self-titled EP on Brassneck Records. It’s streaming right now on their Bandcamp where you can also order the album on cassette tape. If you don’t have a cassette deck, pick one up at your local thrift store and be especially punk rock about it.
Opening track “Vincent Van Go-Go” makes it clear what you’re in for. The hooky guitars create something not just catchy, but with a ton of warmth. It’s hard to hear if there’s synthesizers in there or if its just the way the guitars are distorted, but it adds the perfect effect to the song. “I’ll Be Right Back” takes a more downbeat tune with elements of The Anniversary in the way it creates a wall of sound with electronic elements and femme vocals. “Look Alive, Judy!” as much fun as its exclamatory title sounds like it would be. The combination masc and femme vocals contrast each other in really gorgeous ways.
“Get Well Now!” is the final original song on the EP, with more elements of early Anniversary present in their pop-punk style. Then we’re treated to something that every pop punker should appreciate: a cover of early Blink-182 radio hit “Dammit.” There’s not much added from the original, but the South London accents do create a slightly different dimension to the whole song. Finally, the band finish off the EP with an acoustic version of “Look Alive, Judy!” that’s every bit as fantastic as the electric version, especially given the inclusion of the keyboards (which isn’t particularly acoustic, but that’s OK). Truly, any pop punk lover is going to adore this album from start to finish.
