Bandcamp of the Day: When Tigers Used to Smoke

When Tigers Used to Smoke are an indie pop group from Birmingham, U.K. They recently released a new single called “Momentary Bliss” and an accompanying b-side called “Away (Stripped),” both of which are now streaming on the band’s Bandcamp.

“Momentary Bliss” has an achingly gorgeous, delicate melody that’s complimented perfectly by the vocals that are clean, crisp, and heavily emotional. You also have to appreciate the drumming, which doesn’t draw much attention to itself, despite being so intricate and complex. “Away (Stripped)” starts off with just the singer on an acoustic guitar for about a full minute until the full band comes in, giving it an almost danceable, light Bossa Nova style at times. These two tracks are really beautiful examples of what indie pop can be.
