Wowza in Kalamazoo are a post-punk group that sound unlike just about anything you’ve heard before.
The band recently put out a three-track album called Milo On a Bike which, as their email to us promised, is not a Descendents’ cover. It’s streaming right now on the group’s Bandcamp page.
In fact, it’s about as far from the Descendents as a song could get because, rather than a short and punchy punk tune, the title track is a huge post-punk epic that clocks in at over 13 minutes long. It goes through a lot of experimental styles that, at time, border on ambient noise and non-musical elements. But ultimately it’s a complex piece that creates an overwhelming sense of anxiety.
“Hans Vollman”—presumably a play off the Simpsons’ character Hans Moleman—is then the short middle of the sandwich, with a bit of a psychedelic folk vibe between the two longer tracks. The fact that it’s a bit shorter doesn’t change how experimental and downright bizarre it gets.
Bizarre can be a good thing, and it certainly is when you unearth new sounds like this. Finally “Cactus Improvisation #1” is exactly what it promises, an improvisational experiment in ambient sounds that never really approaches the realm of musicality but certainly makes for a fascinating experiment in sound and noise.
