We’re pleased to bring you the premiere of Belmont’s music video for their song “Albert” (watch it below). The track is taken from the band’s forthcoming self-titled album, which is scheduled to be released on August 17, 2018 through Mutant League Records. You can pre-order the album here.
We talked briefly with the band about the new release, collaborating with producer Dan Korneff, and their upcoming tour with Such Gold (see below). For tickets & more information, go here.
Your new self-titled LP is coming out August 17th. Having collaborated with famed producer Dan Korneff (Paramore, A Day To Remember) on these songs, how did his input help shape the sound of the album?
Sam: Working with Dan allowed us to go in depth with each songs mix. Because of his style of mixing with the band we were really able to communicate what we wanted to be highlighted. His expertise and experience is really what helped shape the sound.
You guys just announced a full US album release tour with Such Gold. You’ve mentioned in other interviews that SG has been a big influence for Belmont – how does it feel to take them out on tour?
Brian: Such Gold has been a huge collective influence for our band since the beginning. It’s absolutely wild to be going on the road with them, we never thought something like this would happen! We feel that fans of both bands will be very happy to see us on a show together.
How did the songwriting approach for the new record differ from your 2016 release Between You & Me?
Brian: The songwriting has matured a lot since Between You and Me. We were all in high school at the time that the EP was recorded, so a good amount of time and experience had passed since then. I know what I want in the bands sound and evolution a lot more clearly. All of the music prior to our new record had been written by myself and Taz. This time around, we went into Graphic Nature studios to work with Jason Inguagiato who was a friend of mine I met at Berklee and would end up joining Belmont. We didn’t know if we were going to record the actual record or make a whole demo of the record, but we ended up making what we wanted to be the new record. I already had songs and riffs written and the idea of what I wanted in the new music, but when everything already written was laid out, there were still holes to fill. A lot of things came up on the spot and were written in a matter of two days. Everyone was able to throw in their spices and collaborate in the process. Jason also got to help in the writing process as well with producing. This pressure and improvisation aspect created a very cool effect on the record, and we are very happy with the outcome. People can expect a new direction with Belmont fusing progressive, hip hop, fusion, alternative, and heavy influences along with the original energetic Belmont sound.
What’s the overall lyrical theme behind these new songs?
Taz: The lyrics for this album were written over several months and reflect on the emotional change and growth I’ve experienced during that time. The two main themes of this album include self reflection / loathing which is apparent during the first half of the record, while the second half focuses more on the themes of letting go and finding what you need to be happy.
What song on the new album do you think will surprise Belmont fans the most?
Sam: Definitely our interlude track. [Featured artist] Shinigami has been a friend of ours for a while,so it’s going to be exciting to share what we’ve made with him.
