Crate Digger: An Obsession With Punk Records
By Bob Suren
(Microcosm)

If you’ve been loitering around the punk scene for awhile, Bob Suren’s name will surely be familiar to you. The frontman for Failure Face, the owner and operator of Sound Idea distribution/record shop, and the CEO of Burrito Records, Suren’s also hosted radio shows, booked shows, toured with bands and inspired legions of youngsters around Florida to pursue their punk rock dreams.

The title of Suren’s book would lead one to think that this would be an ideal guide for any aspiring or veteran collector. And while there certainly are a lot of references to albums and plenty record geek talk to be found, there’s a much deeper theme under the tales of running into punk rock celebrities and highly sought out wax. Turns out that while Suren was juggling a dozen projects he was also building friendships, making indelible memories, and, later on, aiding in the dissolution of his marriage.

Ultimately, we learn through Suren’s quick stories that his record collection consists of much more than fuel for his turntable. From the early days as a bright eyed teen to the cusp of being middle aged and shattered, you’re going to find out real quick that Suren has stories to tell that you want to hear. Be sure to clear off a couple hours from your schedule when you start this, cause you won’t put it down until you’re finished.
