Bandcamp of the Day: Contour

Contour

South Carolina RnB singer and bedroom pop producer Khari Lucas aka Contour has penned a richly passionate and painfully patient treatise on modern romance on his latest EP, Love Suite.

It’s pretty typical for RnB singers to extoll the lurid details of their attractions and the trists that follow. Drama is usually the thing that greases the wheels in these depictions of short flings and fast fallouts. Contour’s Love Suite is different in that it is compelling without being salacious.

Contour neither plays the philandering cad, nor a blushing neophyte, taken advantage of by a swindling lover. There are no revenge plots, nor pleading apologies on the verge of drowning in their own guilty tears. The story is much more streamlined, clean, linear, and frankly, mature.

On Love Suite, Contour composes a tale of a man meeting a lover- it is good for a while, and then it isn’t. And then they break it off. Afterwhich he finds himself thinking alone while swirling a drink at an empty bar, and his former lover is presumably doing the same. They both have futures to step into and further lessons to learn, just not together. It’s beautifully sad and painfully real, and comes from a place of both wisdom and optimism.

There are pulpier, more seductive, and scandalous RnB records out there that will sate your appetite for dumb fun, but when you’re ready to settle down and get real, Contour will be here waiting for you to join him at the bar to talk about what’s really going on in your life.
