Bandcamp of the Day: Low Moder

Low Moder

Uk’s Low Moder started the way most great underground bands do, as a drunken conversation between friends over video games. With little more guidance than a sticky note slapped to their frontal lobes with the words “noise rock” scrolled on it, Low Modor has taken the amorphous concept of the genre and grounded it in the surprisingly sturdy mortar of their collective passions and derangements. Low Modor accomplish this by layering a brutish Protomartyr kind of post-punk bawl between folds of smearing, Shellac-esque, feedback buried hooks that support a kind of beatnik-at-the-end-of-history, stream-of-delusion-story-telling, that would make Williams S Burroughs want to look into these lads’ genealogy to see if he accidentally fathered any of them (hypothetically, if he were still alive, that is [and, if he was into girls]).

Low Modor’s self-titled debut EP opens with “Crackle” which jangles its way across the foyer with an acrid cowbell and spilling tremolo guitars that push and drag your ears across a searingly hot sonic landscape like a tumbleweed being pulled through tar. “3 Times Hall of Famer” is amongst the more urgently paced tracks on the album, as well as one of the more overtly indebted to Protomartyr’s brand of howl-and-lurch grooves and burning, cold-wind vocal melodies. The EP winds down with the wind-up of “Matching Outfits” a fiery post-hardcore, stroke and splash anchored in images of superstition and grand plans that will never be realized in the life you’re currently living. Bleak? Totally. Cathartic? Abso-fucking-lutely
