Bandcamp of the Day: The Chisel

The Chisel

It’s Monday again, and if a good stiff shot of Oi can’t rouse you from the weekend’s stuper, then you may as well lay back down and accept the ravages of entropy. Time waits for no numskull, and that includes you. As I mentioned, though, as long as you’re up and amongst the living, you can at the very least put something good in your ears.

London’s The Chisel (not the Ted Leo side project, sorry) have essentially released an underclass, instant classic in the form of their new EP, Come See Me / Not The Only One. A boots-to-the-teeth, bottle-to-the-back-of-the-head, ankle-biting brawler that will smash the class of your enclosure, then thunder down the fire escape down to the street and catch a passing bus and be on its way back to Southwark before a call is put into Bobby.

At three tracks and under ten minutes in run time, The Chisel’s second EP is an absolute rush. You won’t know what hit you, but you’ll be glad it did.

The EP is produced by Jonah Falco of Fucked Up and features Charlie “Chubby” Manning-Walker (this time with a different gang) on guitar, as well as Callum Graham on full-throated vocals, which sit surprisingly low in the mix (more like a hardcore record) but I’m not complaining. The swift, kick and tumble of “Come See Me” introduces a fast flow of sharp, diving grooves and ale-bolstered gang-vocals to a delirious merry-go-round of inebriated, youthful angst.

“Not the Only One” is an all-business stomper with a hint of honey-dipped, pub-pumping, power-pop in the chorus. And as if to answer any questions as to whether or not they are the absolute boys, the final track “Criminal Crew,” is a skins-only skid of trouble-rousing vocal call and responses and frack of concrete gouging guitars.

You can stream the entirety of The Chisel’s new EP below via Bandcamp.

The Chisel’s EP is out via Beach Impediment Records in the U.S. and LA VIDA ES UN MUS DISCOS in the U.K.. Their entire stock appears to be sold out though. If you want the EP on vinyl your best bet is Discogs.
