Brazilian one-man band Throe performs a spacey breed of wordless doom and drone, somewhat like Earth, only heavier, more foreboding, and thoroughly in love with the otherworldly wail of a synthesizer.
If I had to pick out one aspect of Throe that really distinguishes the project from other meditative metal outfits, it would be the prominence of synths and the orchestral gloom that they bring to the mix. It makes the simple and elegant numbers on the project’s most recent album Throematism feel weightier, enhancing their imposing presence.
Like the shadow of an ominous rock formation in the distance slowly creeping up over you as the sun sets behind it, extending its aura over you and sending a chill up your spine. In some ways, the numbers on Throematism resemble atmospheric black metal, with the way they use synths to cut through your psyche and tremolos to put your nerves on edge–but these elements are combined with concrete thick, distended, and deconstructed blues riffs in a way that only a disciple of doom could deliver.
If you’ve been seeking an auditory aid to assist you in the contemplation of the darker side of existence, look no further than Throematism.
