Bandcamp of the Day: World of Pleasure

World of Pleasure

As you may recall, a few years back, Netflix fired off a series of Tweets calling out some of their users for streaming huge quantities of material of… questionable quality.

The fact that I have not received a similar message from either Spotify and Bandcamp concerning the number of times I’ve streamed Punch’s They Don’t Have to Believe through their respective services demonstrates a shocking lapse in attention on both of their parts. I’m not demanding an intervention here, but come on guys, at least pretend like you care …

Needless to say, They Don’t Have to Believe is one of my all-time favorite albums, any record that even comes close to matching its sound and energy, is going to get a work out from me for sure. One such record that has become a permanent fixture of my library since it’s release back in September is World of Pleasure’s self-titled demo.

World of Pleasure are a metallic-hardcore band out of Calgary, comprised of vocalist Jess Nyx (also of Mortality Rate) and guitarist Colter (also of Serration). Allowing yourself to be fooled and lulled into a sense of security around their new demo, either by their name, or the fact that the cover art of the album contains the visage of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit’s sweet little punim, would be a grave and stupid mistake. World of Pleasure are a hardline, vegan, straightedge, hardcore band who will make no apologies for their lack of patience with your base self.

Jess simply lunges into these tracks in a way that I can’t help but compare to Meghan O’Neil’s power-violence days. She tackles every phrase like a lion hopping on the back of a gazelle, taking its throat in her jaws and dragging it to the ground for the kill.

Colter’s guitar work rides the razor’s edge that divides young hungry, wolf-pups like Year of the Knife and clobbering guerrillas like All Out War. They’ll smear you like jam on whole-wheat toast all over the pavement and delight in licking up the bloody aftermath like a school kid lapping at a lollipop—all conceptually, of course.

I can’t imagine World of Pleasure endorsing any actual harm befalling an animal, even one as thick-skulled as your average hardcore fan.
